ISO 13485 Certified Catheter Manufacturing
Envaste is an ISO 13485 certified catheter manufacturer and CDMO partner. Every project — whether a device we designed ourselves or one transferred in from a client — runs under the same certified quality management system, with MDSAP alignment and MDR certification.
Assembly takes place in a validated ISO Class 7 cleanroom of 1,500 sq ft, split into two independent rooms so that unrelated programmes can run in parallel without cross-contamination risk. Gowning and material store areas are classified ISO Class 8. Process validation follows IQ/OQ/PQ protocols with statistical process control on dimensional outputs.
Our regulatory team supports clients with documentation packages for 510(k) submission, CE marking, MDR and MDSAP requirements — so the technical file is built alongside the device rather than reconstructed afterwards. See the ISO 13485 quality system in detail.
Device Categories and Clinical Applications
Envaste manufactures its own single-use urology and endoscopy devices, but contract manufacturing is not limited to those fields. Catheter construction is a process platform rather than a clinical speciality: the same extrusion, braiding, coiling, reflow and balloon-forming operations that build a ureteral access sheath also build a shaft for a very different procedure.
Our stretch-blow balloon moulding already serves PTCA and PTA applications alongside urology and endoscopy. The same capability set applies to development programmes in:
- •Cardiovascular and peripheral vascular — PTCA and PTA balloon catheters, multi-layer shafts, low-profile designs
- •Thrombectomy and clot management — large-lumen aspiration shafts, reinforced kink-resistant constructions
- •Electrophysiology — steerable and multi-lumen shafts with embedded reinforcement
- •Implant delivery systems — coaxial constructions, controlled-deployment shafts
- •Urology and endoscopy — access sheaths, cannulae, dilatation balloons, drainage devices
Capability statements describe the processes and equipment available for a development programme. Device classification, clinical validation and market authorisation remain specific to each project and are agreed at the design transfer stage.
Catheter Design, Extrusion and Assembly in One Place
Buyers outsourcing a catheter programme usually have to choose between an extruder, a coating house, an assembly contractor and a packaging supplier — then manage the tolerance stack-up between them. Envaste runs those operations under one quality system, so dimensional responsibility sits with a single supplier from pellet to sealed pouch.
- •Precision extrusion — 2Fr to over 30Fr, multi-lumen profiles, multi-durometer and multi-layer jackets, compounding for radiopacity and lubricity
- •Reinforcement — braiding and coiling embedded directly into the shaft wall for torque transmission and kink resistance
- •Joining — reflow, laser welding, adhesive dispensing and UV curing
- •Surface — hydrophilic coating of shaft and balloon, applied and cured in-house
- •Finishing — cleanroom assembly, testing, labelling, pouch sealing and packaging
Materials in regular use include Pebax and PEBA, nylon, PET, PTFE, polyurethane, polyethylene and silicone, with stainless steel and nitinol for reinforcement and core wires.
Steerable and Multi-Lumen Catheter Manufacturing
Steerable and multi-lumen constructions are the hardest shafts to manufacture repeatably, because deflection behaviour, torque response and lumen integrity all depend on how the reinforcement and durometer transitions are built into the wall rather than added afterwards.
Our extrusion line produces custom internal channel geometries with precision wall control, and braid or coil reinforcement is embedded during extrusion rather than applied as a secondary operation. Durometer transitions along the shaft are extruded in, giving a stiff proximal section for push and a compliant distal section for navigation without a bonded joint at the transition.
For the engineering detail behind these decisions, see our access sheath design guide and balloon catheter engineering guide.
Balloon Catheter, Access Sheath and Cannula Manufacturing
Balloons are formed in-house by stretch-blow moulding in non-compliant, semi-compliant and compliant configurations, with diameters from 0.5 mm to 50 mm. Process control targets consistent wall thickness, high burst resistance and low folded profile — the three properties that determine whether a balloon crosses a tight lesion or stricture and survives repeated inflation.
Access sheaths and cannulae use the same reinforced-shaft platform: a thin-wall extruded liner, embedded braid or coil, and a hydrophilic outer layer, finished with an atraumatic tip and a radiopaque marker where the procedure requires fluoroscopic confirmation. Negative-pressure and suction-assisted sheath constructions are produced on this platform for our own Manawa™ range.
Finished devices are assembled, tested, labelled and pouch-sealed in the ISO Class 7 cleanroom.
OEM and Private-Label Manufacturing
Not every programme needs a new device. Distributors and manufacturers extending a portfolio can take Envaste's existing single-use urology and endoscopy devices as an OEM or private-label supply, with packaging, labelling and documentation prepared under the client's own brand.
Because the devices are already manufactured under our certified quality system, a private-label programme avoids the design, validation and regulatory work that a bespoke development requires. Where a portfolio needs something that does not yet exist, the same team takes it through full custom development instead — see catheter design services.
From Prototype to Scale-Up Production
Outsourcing a catheter programme generally follows the same path, whether the starting point is a sketch or a device already selling in another market.
- Feasibility — clinical requirement translated into shaft geometry, materials and tolerance targets.
- Prototyping — short extrusion runs and hand-built samples for bench evaluation and clinician feedback.
- Design freeze and verification — dimensional, burst, tensile and coating durability testing against the specification.
- Process validation — IQ/OQ/PQ on the production configuration, with SPC limits set from the validation batches.
- Scale-up — transfer to routine cleanroom production, with labelling, pouch sealing and release under the ISO 13485 system.
A device transferred in from another supplier joins at the verification or validation stage, depending on how much of the existing design history file can be relied on.
Catheter Manufacturing & CDMO — Frequently Asked Questions
Which suppliers provide catheter design, extrusion and assembly together?
Envaste provides all three under one ISO 13485 quality system — design and prototyping, precision extrusion with embedded reinforcement, hydrophilic coating, and cleanroom assembly through to labelled and pouch-sealed finished devices. Dimensional responsibility stays with one supplier rather than being split across an extruder, a coater and an assembler.
What cleanroom classification does Envaste manufacture in?
Assembly, labelling and pouch sealing take place in a validated ISO Class 7 cleanroom of 1,500 sq ft, split into two independent rooms. Gowning and material store areas are classified ISO Class 8.
Can Envaste manufacture catheters outside urology and endoscopy?
Yes. Catheter construction is a process platform rather than a clinical speciality. The same extrusion, braiding, coiling, reflow, balloon-forming and coating operations support cardiovascular and peripheral vascular, thrombectomy, electrophysiology and implant delivery programmes. Our balloon moulding already serves PTCA and PTA applications.
Do you offer OEM and private-label catheter supply?
Yes. Existing single-use urology and endoscopy devices can be supplied as OEM or private label, packaged and labelled under the client's brand, which avoids the design and validation work a bespoke development requires.
What does ISO 13485 certification mean for a contract manufacturing client?
It means the processes building your device are the same validated, audited processes that build ours: controlled design transfer, IQ/OQ/PQ process validation, statistical process control, traceable material lots and documented release. It also means the records an auditor or notified body will ask for already exist.
How do I start outsourcing a catheter manufacturing project?
Share the clinical requirement and any existing specification or design history. We come back with a feasibility view on shaft geometry, materials and tolerances, and the stage at which the programme would join — feasibility, prototyping, verification or straight to process validation for a transferred device.
